Twittering Your Way To Success In Your Business

Micro blogging site Twitter has immense potential to seriously promote your business when used smartly and effectively. In this article we look at some of these aforementioned smart ways in you can promote your business effectively, using Twitter, in addition to ways in which you could increase your Twitter followers.

Twitter as a social networking and micro blogging service has really caught on in very quick time. As of February 2009, Twitter was noted to be the third most popular social networking site worldwide, with 6 million unique monthly visitors and 55 million monthly visits.

The concept of Twitter and Twittering is rather simple, akin to “SMS on the Internet”, wherein you send out short messages of 140 characters or less, and within that, try to convey your point across, to your “followers”, i.e. those who are following your Twitter updates. November 2009 onwards, Twitter has started to ask its users for status updates with the question, “What’s happening?”, as opposed to “What are you doing?” before that; the implication is that Twitter has gone on to gain wider relevance, from being just a platform for updating what one is doing, to actually giving out useful news and information.

You as a small business owner could effectively use the Twitter platform as an excellent means towards promoting your products and services. In short and succinct messages, you could tell all your followers about new developments in your business as well as any personal information, which might be of interest to them.

For instance, if you are a small business owner operating in a close knit community wherein people are mostly well known to each other and most of your customers happen to know each other as well as you personally, even a personal Tweet such as the birth of a new born in your family will be well received by them, and will be yet another way of reminding them about your existence. Remember that every Tweet serves to remind all your followers about your presence, and in doing so, about the value that you add to their lives.

Already Twitter has been effectively used by various national and international entities, including celebrities such as Britney Spears and Ashton Kutcher who are active Tweeters. Twitter was actively used during the 2008 US Presidential campaign, in particular by President Barack Obama. NASA has been an active proponent of Twitter. Twitter has also been seen to be an effective means of communicating, in any emergency situation, as was witnessed in the spurt of Tweets, numbering an average of 80 every 5 seconds, during the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks in India.

Considering such a rich repertoire of Twitter users and Twitter usage, by now it should be quite obvious to you that your using Twitter for your small business really should not be a big deal. Remember that Tweeting definitely helps develop a personal rapport with your customers, as well as with all stakeholders in the community you operate in.

It is important though that you maximize the number of followers; if you are in a small community or a niche business, it is important that you try and have all those tweeting actively, on your list of followers. Remember that more the number of followers, your message will in turn be relayed on to as well as received by more number of people. Increasing your followers need not be an uphill task; use your existing contacts to start building your list, and then gradually use those followers as a pedestal to gain more followers. And try to convert every new customer who is active on the online space, into a Twitter follower.

While doing the above, it is important that you do not spam your followers as it will only detest them about you and the goods or services that you have on offer. Maintain a judicious approach and Tweet optimally. Also, you need not always Tweet about your own business. Suppose you are a manufacturer and retailer of home made chocolates; a Tweet about Willy Wonka or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, might just be as interesting and engaging to them, and yet remind them not only about you, but also about the business you are in.

Therefore, think of topical and engaging topics you could Tweet on and get your followers to initiate dialogue and discussion upon. Your ultimate aim of smartly and subtly promoting your business will be well and truly achieved.
