Does business coaching always have to take place personally and face to face?

A lot of business coaches have a false impression that when it comes to imparting business coaching services, the same can be done only in a personal or face to face situation. Obviously, this becomes a major stumbling block as well, since clients are often located at various, distant parts of the country, as indeed the world in general. And obviously, it is nearly impossible to travel to all these parts and impart the requisite business coaching in person, at all times.

That said, thankfully it need not be that way in the very first place; thanks to advancements in technology, it is not at all necessary for the business coach to always be there in person in order to make sure that the requisite business coaching is imparted without a hitch.

Take the case of the Internet as well as technology platforms such as video conferencing. Using these tools, two or more individuals located in virtually any part of the world can easily communicate with each other face to face (albeit through these television or computer screens) instead of having to rely on being in person with one another.

Further, there are in fact a lot of business coaches who make do without even these tools. For instance, there are a lot of business coaches around the world who simply do not have any physical presence whatsoever. As a matter of fact, it is rare that they even meet clients in person. All that they do is have a website of their own wherein they keep providing requisite inputs, knowledge and guidance to clients. Further, when it comes to one on one interaction, they do so using a blend of telephone calls, VoIP such as Skype, and so on. Moreover, often their websites themselves are so packed with information that clients rarely feel the need to actually approach these business coaches face to face.

Additionally, if we look at Internet based tools such as EBooks, they have made the distribution of knowledge and information that much simpler; if one needs general guidance with regard to all of the wisdom that a particular business coach has on offer, he or she can easily do so by grabbing a copy of the aforementioned EBooks, without actually having to approach the business coach in person.

Amazingly John, I’ve discovered that effective business coaching doesn’t even need the coach. The secret to success in a coaching engagement is the willingness, on the part of the client, to hear, accept and incorporate a new point of view on some issue with which s/he’s struggling. Being open to other’s ideas or hearing something with a focus on ‘how can this work for me?’ is a sign that someone’s coachable and willing to try another way of X, with or without the coach! I’m delighted to say I have a number of clients who’ve made this leap to a new way of thinking as a result of our work together and now it happens for them, even when I’m not part of the equation.

    enjoy the day,
    Andrea

      Hi Andrea,

Thanks for your comments. Your point is well taken. Transformation can take place in a single coaching session, depending on the skill of the coach, and the willingness of the client to be open minded and take action consistently. There are some people who require some kind of accountability system to stick with the action plan that the coach outlines for them. I think long term transcontextual change in behavior will usually require the client to go through some kind of core transformation process for it to stick. This can be done on the telephone in the comfort of the clients home. The real measure of a coaches effectiveness is what the client does when you’re not part of the equation as you point out. I appreciate you taking the time to read the article and share
      your valuable perspective.
